About Abdominal Workouts
For some people, no matter how hard they exercise they cannot lose abdominal fat. Abdominal fat consists of visceral and subcutaneous fat layers. Visceral fat is found in the upper abdomen. Subcutaneous fat is located in the lower portion of the abdomen. Both types can present big problems for men and women. To get tighter abs and lose fat, people may need to do abdominal workouts.
Types of Muscles
You have upper, lower and oblique muscles. Also do not forget the deep muscle tissues. They include the transverse, rectus and internal obliques. Since these muscles lie deep within your abdomen, they may be the hardest to tone or strengthen.
Sit-ups
This is the most commonly used method to lose inches from around the waistline and tighten up muscles. Unless you do your sit-ups properly, you can end up with back pain or muscle strain. It's also possible to push out your abdomen by doing the exercises incorrectly. Sit-ups can also work out only one area of your abs. You may end up losing subcutaneous fat instead of visceral fat and vice versa.
Crunches
The best way to strengthen, tighten and firm abdominal muscles is to try crunches. Crunches are shorter versions of sit-ups that can be completed on the floor, medicine balls or abdominal weight equipment. There are numerous ways to do crunches including leg raises, toe touches and twist.
Crunches typically target all of the muscles in the upper and lower abdominal areas. You accomplish this by tightening your muscles as you lift your head and shoulders off the floor. With sit-ups, you have to lift your entire upper body off the floor. You can lose the tension in your abdomen with this method as you lift upward.
Abdominal Equipment
A number of products cater to abdominal exercises. Many of these products may not work or offer little results. If you choose to use an abdominal workout product, make sure it targets every area of your abdominal muscles including the obliques.
