About Adult Nurse Practitioner Certification

Adult nurse practitioners are trained registered nurses who are qualified to work in the capacity of a primary care provider. In order to become an adult nurse practitioner, you must have undergone specialized training and be eligible to get the Adult Nurse Practitioner Certification.

Qualifications

To obtain certification as an adult nurse practitioner, you will need to meet the requirements for taking the adult nurse practitioner exam. Eligibility includes having an up to date and active RN license in any of the states. You are also eligible if you have a master’s or doctorate for an adult nurse practitioner with 500 supervised practical work hours. These qualifications have to be accredited by either the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Exam

The exam is offered during specific periods within the year. You must test during one of the open testing periods through a computer-based exam. To apply for testing, you need to fill out and send the application forms and the specified payment to the American Nurses Credentialing Center. You also need to include a copy of your RN license with the application. Once you take and pass the test, you will receive ANP-BC primary care certification.

Maintaining Your Certification

Your adult nurse practitioner certificate will be valid for a period of five years. Renewals are to be done at least eight weeks prior to your current certificate’s expiration date. Keep records of all your professional advancements over the years that are related to your certification.
