About Aggressive Canine Behavior

For the most parts, dogs are loving and compassionate animals, but sometimes problems with aggression can arise.  Dealing with a hostile dog can be very frustrating and at times dangerous.  Learning more about the causes of aggressive canine behavior and the techniques used to eliminate it can help you teach your dog to obey your commands.

Causes

There are many different reasons why a dog may become aggressive.   One of the most common causes for aggressive canine behavior in adult dogs is abuse or neglect they suffered as puppies.  Another reason is battle for dominance, which is especially common with new dogs.  When a new dog joins a household, he might try to establish his dominance over the new owner by behaving aggressively.  In many cases, there is no direct cause of aggressive canine behavior.  It can be something that happens naturally.  Dogs that show signs of aggression when they are six weeks old are very likely to remain hostile as adults.

How to Eliminate Aggressive Canine Behavior

Don’t let your dog scare you or push you around, although you should never attempt to confront a dog that is about to attack.  Teach your dog commands, and insist that he listens to you.  Dogs are very intelligent, and they can manipulate you if you let them.  Backing down tells them that they are the masters of the house and that they don’t have to listen to you.  Another way to show your dog that he must obey you is to control his feeding and walking schedule.  This will send a signal that you are the dominant force in the household.  If you fear your dog, or you have a dog that is known for naturally exhibiting aggressive canine behavior, contact a professional trainer for help.
