About Animal Photography Careers

A career in animal photography can be a dream for an artist who loves animals and wants to combine his interests. Becoming a photographer takes an artistic eye and excellent quality photo equipment, but the profession of animal photographer also requires a lot of patience. The proper balance of these skills and interests can lead to an ideal career in animal photography.

Pet Photographer

As with any photography profession, being a pet photographer requires the knowledge and skill to take a professional quality picture. However, working as a pet photographer also takes a lot of patience and a great love for animals. Animals don’t always cooperate, so getting the right shot can take some time. A pet photographer should be willing to interact with the animal by playing with it, getting down to its level and even offering any treats the pet’s owner allows. Pet photographers can set their own schedule, but should be flexible and able to work around their clients’ work schedules.

Zoo Photographer

An animal photographer who works for a zoo will be working with both animals and people. Shooting special events and fundraisers are a part of a zoo photographer’s job, as well as taking pictures of special guests with select animals. A zoo photographer takes and edits pictures to use for the zoo’s publicity and is often in charge of documenting changes for the zoo’s website. A career in zoo photography requires a flexible schedule and the
ability to work with a variety of people and animals.

Wildlife Photographer

A wildlife photographer is one who takes pictures of animals in the wild. One of the most important rules of wildlife photography is that animals are most active very early in the morning, so a wildlife photographer must be willing to get up long before the sun. A wildlife photographer must also have a great deal of patience. Wild animals are not on our schedule, so waiting to take the desired picture can take hours. While patience is not always rewarded, when it is the wildlife photographer can end up with an amazing and breathtaking shot.
