About Aquaculture Fish Farming
Fish farming is becoming more prevalent around the world. This is a good thing because it helps to sustain fish populations and feeds more people. Most of the salmon on the market now has been farm raised, but salmon is not the only species that can be successfully farm raised.
Intensive Aquaculture Fish Farming
Right now, there are two methods of fish farming. The first is as intensive aquaculture fish farming. With intensive fish farming, the fish are fed by the farmer and do not need to look for their food as they do in the wild. The amount of fish raised by this method of farming will depend on the fish species, food available and amount of oxygen in the water. With this type of farming, there must be a large supply of fresh water available. This is accomplished in one of two ways; the first is to fence off an area of a body of water such as the ocean, a lake or section of river. This allows for a natural flow of fresh water. The second is to build large tanks where the water is continuously cleaned by a filtration system.
Extensive Aquaculture Fish Farming
This method of fish farming is where the fish have to find their own food. What the farmer does is to add fertilizers and nutrients to the pond where the fish live, so that the growth of algae and other food sources is enhanced. Fish that are farmed using this method of aquaculture will be plant-eating fish, which has another advantage. More than one kind of fish can be raised in the same pond, because the fish will not be preying on one another thus making the pond more profitable and efficient. Two of the fish that are commonly raised by this method of fish farming are carp and tilapia. They go together well because the carp will feed on various grasses while the tilapia will feed on algae, so there is no competition for food sources among the fish.
