About Basic Gymnastics for Children
Children who participate in gymnastics can improve their balance, flexibility and muscle coordination. It also improves a child's self-esteem and confidence. Each age range has a group of activities for developing the skills needed to advance to the next skill level.
Toddlers
Children can begin gymnastics when they are about two years of age. The activities are primarily intended as physical exercise and to prepare the child for more specific exercises. Gymnastics for toddlers are easy to learn. Common activities in this age range include hopping, jumping, rolling, somersaults, stretching and tumbling.
Ages 5 to 7
Children in the age range of 5 to 7 years can begin using gymnastic apparatuses scaled for their height. The vault and uneven bars primarily develop strength and coordination. Children of this age can also perform the balance beam and floor exercises, which do not require modifications for the child's size. General movements for children at least 5 years of age include backbends, front splits and straddle splits.
Age 7 and Older
Children who are at least 7 years of age typically have the size needed to use regulation-sized apparatuses such as the vault and uneven bars. Additional apparatuses such as the pommel horse and rings may also be introduced at this age. General activities suitable for children at least 7 years of age include jumping and leaping. These activities are used in specific stunts such as handsprings, straddle jumps and round-offs. Children must be 16 years of age to compete in Olympic gymnastics.
