About Black Mold Removal From Wood

Mold grows best on natural fibers, so wood is an excellent breeding ground for mold if it is allowed to get wet without proper ventilation. If mold has formed on the surface of wood, there are ways that it can be treated and prevented so that it does not return.

  1. Remove any mulch that is around the wood that has mold growing on it. Mulch can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, and can often be the cause of the mold on the surrounding wood.

  2. Place a plastic tarp underneath the wood that you are going to be treating for mold. This will allow you to catch the mold as it falls so that it is not allowed to fall onto the ground and cause more mold to form.

  3. Using a paint scraper, scrape off the mold on the surface of the wood. Be careful that the mold that falls off of the wood lands on the tarp. This is very important so that the mold is not allowed to continue to grow and spread to other unaffected areas.

  4. Wipe down the area that you have scraped the mold off of with vinegar so that it kills the remaining mold spores that are left on the surface. This will prevent them from multiplying and growing.

  5. Choose a paint that kills mold and mildew such as KILZ Primer and Paint. This is going to seal off the area so that the mold is effectively killed, and will also prevent the mold from reoccurring as well.

  6. Allow the first coat to dry, and then apply a second coat of paint to the treated area.

  7. Wipe down the tarp with bleach or vinegar to disinfect the tarp so that the mold spores are not allowed to multiply and grow.
