About Breast Cancer

According to the Mayo Clinic, breast cancer is defined as a cancer of the breast cells. It's one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States, second only to lung cancer. Among women, it is the most common form of cancer. If you are concerned about cancer, you'll want to learn as much as you can about the disease.

Symptoms

There are certain signs to look for if you are suspicious about breast cancer. Originally your first sign may be a lump or thickening of the breast tissue as well as a change in the shape or size of your breasts. You may notice that your nipple is inverted, peeling or flaking. There may also be some bloody discharge from your nipple as well.

Men and Breast Cancer

Although breast cancer is most often associated with women, men are also victims of this disease. In fact, approximately 1,600 men are diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 400 men die as a result of this disease.

Risks

When it comes to breast cancer risks, there are certain risk factors for both men and women. For women risk factors include: being over the age of 50, a family history of breast cancer, women who have never had children or who have given birth after the age of 30. When it comes to men who have breast cancer the risks are: advanced age, hyperestrogenism-associated diseases, testicular injury, exposure to radiation, a family history of either male or female breast cancer and mumps orchitis.

Diagnosis

If there is a suspicion that a breast tumor is cancerous, your doctor will make a diagnosis in several ways. He will perform a clinical exam and use an ultrasound to locate the exact tumor location. A core needle biopsy or a fine needle biopsy of the tumor will also be taken.

Treatment

The course of treatment depends on several factors such as the type of cancer, your age, the stage of cancer and your overall health. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, supplemental and hormonal therapy are some of the treatments for breast cancer.
