About Classical Antiquities

Classical antiquities are artifacts from a certain period of time. In most cases this term refers to Mediterranean culture. Books and papers from the time of Homer through the beginning of Christian history, ending around the time the early middle ages started to change are all considered classical antiquities.

Classical antiquities center around a period of time in history that has to do with the culture on and around the Mediterranean Sea. It happens to revolve around the ancient Rome and Greek civilizations and how they were interlocked. Combined, they were called the Greco-Roman world. This is when the most well known Roman and Greek literature came about.

Start and Finish

This time frame will begin with Homer, the famous Greek poet. It will go on through the beginning of Christianity as well as when the Roman Empire began its decline. This particular time period stopped with the ending of Late Antiquity which brought on the conclusion of classical culture as they knew it. It was then that the early middle ages began.

Classical Antiquity

Some will think of classical antiquity as the romanticized vision people had in the famous words of Edgar Allan Poe. The words that caused this particular feeling were “the glory that was Greece, the grandeur that was Rome”.

The Culture

It was the ancient Greek’s culture, as well as the influences of the ancient Orient, that founded the basis of society, educational ideas, art and philosophy. The Romans took over all of this and had a large influence on the modern world in many different ways. In the 14th century, the classical antiquity movement came back in pieces. This time is now known as the Renaissance. In the 18th and the 19th centuries it came back one more time while the revival of neo-classical was happening.
