How to Develop an Environmental Management System

About Corporate Environmental Management

Finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint has been the aim of many corporations throughout the last decade, but they are also finding ways to improve the environment locally by helping to build and restore, while educating children and adults. Meanwhile, others choose to reduce paper usage, cut back on electronic uses and make other concessions to improve the environment and maintain a natural balance.

About Corporate Environmental Management

What and how much a corporation does to improve the area where their facilities are located is really more of a matter of conscience, although some businesses fall under EPA regulations. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulates companies that produce oil, oil by-products, coal, electricity or any other resource that when unchecked can become an ecological hazard to animal life, human life and the life of planet earth.

In-House Environmental Management

When companies such as Microsoft do not produce a product that necessarily falls under regulation through the EPA’s standards, they may practice in-house management. Many of these corporations that manage large offices filled with people and multiple tasks requiring pounds of paper, pens, and ink have chosen to use recycled products, cut back on the amount of paper they use by storing more information on man-made products, and restricting energy use. Every corporation can practice good-green measures by conserving their resources. However, Microsoft has taken that a step further by offering buy-back plans that allow them to recycle the products they do produce.

Environmental Management through Education and Outreach

Other companies such as Shell, Exxon, and some pharmaceutical producers, whose production is done in third-world countries, are helping to develop environmentally-friendly standards with the local population through education and community outreach. They are helping to make small minds wiser while educating and training adults. They help to develop sanitation and health awareness programs as well as establishing clinics. Some take this a step further by ensuring that their production does not compromise the ready food supplies in areas where hunting and fishing are still very much a way of life.

Regulations, Environmentalist, Government and Agencies

Many corporations work with an environmentalist to improve the way and quality of life in their local communities. Some do this voluntarily while others must follow the regulations that govern production. Governments from different nations gather at Kyoto and the UN set standards by which participating countries will be able to limit their carbon footprint and improve relations with those in the areas where they produce their goods. Corporate image is everything to companies hoping to not only sell their product, but to establish themselves as environmentally sound and caring organizations.
