How to Reduce Car Painting Mistakes

About Custom Car Painting

There is nothing more satisfying than making a car your own. There are many ways to do this. A custom exhaust system can give you the look and sound you are seeking. However, there is nothing you could do to make the car look just the way you want it more than a custom paint job.

What you will need:

Sketch pad, pencil, wax stripper, masking tape, safety glasses, paintbrush, rubber gloves, paint, paint stripper, painting tools

Directions:

  1. Visualize what you are looking for in your custom car design, and apply that design (including colors) to your sketchpad with pencil. Be detailed with your sketch so that you will know exactly what you want the car to look like when you are finished.

  2. Give your car a thorough wash to remove all dirt grime that has accumulated. Even small pieces of debris can cause difficulties when you start applying the paint.

  3. Protect the parts of the vehicle you do not want painted on by covering with newspaper. Apply masking tape onto the newspaper parts, including the windshield, windows, mirrors and tires.

  4. Put on gloves and safety goggles. Use a wax remover to remove the wax, then a paint stripper to strip off the old paint. After the stripper has had time to set in, rinse if off to prevent any damage to the car's metal.

  5. Check to make sure that the paper is still in place after rinsing.

  6. Paint the vehicle according to the design you drew.  It is best to use urethane paint and a hardener, which will leave your car with a sharp, polished look. Get the general shape of your design initially, then add additional details as you continue painting. You can use a sprayer for larger areas of your vehicle, but be careful not to spray over your design. The fine detail will require a small brush. You will need to apply a number of coats.

  7. Make sure the car has adequate time to dry in a moisture-free area. Plan for about 24 hours to dry.
