About DUI Classes
Whenever you are ordered to attend DUI classes, you may have a lot of questions about what will be discussed, who will be in attendance, and how much time it is going to take. While these will vary from state to state, there are some things that you can expect.
- After you are sentenced, you will be required to get a drug and alcohol use assessment to determine the duration and stipulations of your DUI classes. Most first-time offenders will be required to attend a one day or a weekend class that only lasts a few hours. However, if you have multiple DUI offenses, you may be required to complete a long-term series of classes that will last for several weeks.
- Short-term classes will cover such topics as the effects of alcohol on the body, your state’s DUI laws and listen to some stories from other offenders and victims. Usually there is no requirement other than you are in attendance.
- Long-term DUI classes require complete abstinence from alcohol throughout the time of the classes. You will also need to attend all classes and be on time; be ready to submit to random drug or alcohol testing; complete homework assignments; and bring a family member to at least one class.
- Scheduling preferences cannot necessarily be accommodated for. Nevertheless, you must be in full compliance with all of the rules. Failure to do so can result in jail time. As such, you may even need to go so far as to arrange for transportation to and from the classes since they may occur while your driver’s license is suspended.
