About Distance Learning Courses

Distance learning courses feature instructional opportunities to students who want an education, but do not have the time or appropriate schedules to attend class in person. Offering flexibility and convenience, this mode of learning has become popular in recent years.

Definition

Distance learning courses are lessons that take place outside of a traditional classroom. The course materials may be accessible on the Internet, or students may use videos or television broadcasts. Students communicate with the professor through email, telephone or online chat rooms. Examinations are completed online or by actually visiting the school's facility.

Advantages

This type of course gives students the flexibility to finish exercises, essays or assessments at their own pace. The individual can study in the morning, afternoon or night according to their personal schedule. Students can still have a job or fulfill household responsibilities.

Programs

While most traditional learning institutions have a distance education department, some schools use an online format for all of their courses. Students can select a few distance learning classes to meet their graduate requirements, or choose a degree program that is exclusively online.

Considerations

Distance learning has a number of advantages, but students must also be able to work independently in order to succeed. Contact with the professors and other students is minimized in this type of learning environment, and students may have to wait for a response to questions or problems. In addition, some schools charge an additional fee for distance learning classes.
