About Dog Separation Anxiety
Separation anxiety in dogs is a condition that manifests itself in destructive behavior and stressful responses from your dog when you leave the house or drop him off at the vet, doggy day care, etc. Dogs with separation anxiety are usually nervous and may become frantic as you prepare to leave.
Causes of Separation Anxiety
The exact cause of separation anxiety is not clear, but there are many events that can trigger it:
- Being suddenly left alone after constant human companionship, such as when you take a job.
- Possible abuse from a previous owner or being a stray on the streets.
- Lack of exercise and opportunities to expend energy.
- Suffering from a trauma such as moving or being placed in a boarding kennel.
- Loss of a companion such as another dog.
- Addition of a new member of the house, i.e. a new baby.
Treatment for Separation Anxiety
Your dog is not acting out from disobedience, but rather out of panic at your absence. Punishment, crating or getting another dog can make the problem more severe. Instead, create a spacious safe place with toys for distraction, such as a laundry room or large bathroom. Give your dog a t-shirt with your scent for comfort while you are away. Try desensitizing your dog by teaching him to stay in one room while you spend time in another. Talk to your vet about calming medicines to help in the meantime, while learning to cope through training. Separation anxiety does not have to control your dog. Patience, training and creating a safe place can help your dog overcome his fears and behave calmly while you are away.
