About Electrical Engineering Schools

The world has needed people with a certain amount of electrical knowledge ever since Benjamin Franklin discovered how to use it back in 1752. Electrical engineers work with, among other things, designing the electrical system for a building and wiring equipment for manufacturers. These engineers typically need a bachelor's degree from a 4-year university before they can land a job.

Online Programs

Online schools offer a way for students to attend classes without having to take courses around a set, on-campus schedule. This method of study makes it easier for you to work another job or take care of kids while you study and earn your degree. In some cases, you can earn your degree strictly through an accredited online school such as Devry University. Another way you can take online classes is through a traditional university or community college that offers courses online. Taking classes this way may require you to go on campus every once in a while during the course of each semester.

 Traditional Universities

Traditional colleges, such as the University of Louisiana or the University of Florida, offer students the option of majoring in engineering. Certain universities, including the University of Minnesota, Purdue University and the University of Texas at Austin, specialize in engineering degrees. You will have to complete the course requirements for your associate’s degree before you can start working on the classes surrounding your engineering major. You will need to take a more math and science classes for this type of degree as compared to another, less technical, avenue of study.

Graduate Universities

Engineers who have already graduated can move on to obtain a graduate degree. A graduate degree is required for those who want to enter into fields such as research and development. Some four-year universities offer engineering graduate degrees, both online and off. Those who want to work with the public will need to complete the course requirements for their professional engineers licensure program.
