About Event Planning as a Career

Event planning as a career draws on a unique combination of creativity, organizational skills and communication capacity. Event planners are employed by governments, corporations and non-profit institutions to plan events and meetings. Working as an event planner requires on-the-job experience that is best gained by working with an experienced planner.

Event planning is an exciting career that spans a wide array of sectors and industries. The work of an event planner is to oversee all aspects of an event from the planning phase to event completion. An event planner may coordinate with a large number of people, including administrators, technicians, caterers and marketing professionals.

Event planning careers exist in both the public and private sector. Large corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations all hire event planners. Wherever meetings, conventions and other events must be planned, an event planner is needed to organize and coordinate all aspects of the event. The planner usually starts by meeting with prominent individuals, such as directors and team leaders, to determine the vision for an event.

Based on the message the event must convey and the specific required activities, an event planner maps out specific steps for bringing everything to fruition. Reserving space in a building or outdoor arena, contacting marketers to generate the right flyers and banners, procuring the services of caterers and wait staff, and coordinating the event schedule are all included.

Although some companies and organizations require that event planners have a college degree, planning an event is a skill that can be learned on the job. An administrative assistant in a company may work her way up to the position of an event planner simply by virtue of assisting others in planning important meetings and events. This career generally requires strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Large-scale events require an event planner with many years of on-the-job experience to adequately manage various event elements and problem solve in the event of mishaps and miscommunication.
