About Fashion Design
Most people who are interested in fashion design enjoy working with fabrics, colors, patterns, as well as mixing and matching outfits and accessories and tend to have a love for clothes. Fashion design is a creative field that requires those interested in it to be trendy and original with their designs.
More Than Just Clothes
People who become fashion designers don’t just wear clothes for protective purposes. Fashion designers see clothes with a different perspective. Clothes can empower people and make them feel better about themselves. Clothes can be a creative outlet for people to express how they are feeling.
Skills
Fashion design may require drawing or sketching. This skill can be learned, but some people have a natural talent. Being able to have even beginner level drawing skills is helpful to fashion designers because it allows them to bring an idea to life by sketching it out on paper. This allows the designer to make changes and adjustments before the sewing process begins.
Working with computers is something a fashion designer must know how to do. Many fashion design companies work with computer programs like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create floats, flats and CADs.
Sewing is a skill that may not be as important as others but it is a helpful skill to have when working in the fashion design industry. If a situation occurs when you have to do fittings, it may be good to learn some patterning and draping skills. This basically involves understanding what a good fit is on a person’s body.
Education
Fashion design programs can be done at an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s level and are widespread across the U.S. Other than general education courses, fashion design programs may include courses in drawing, fashion illustration, fashion studio, fashion design, as well as 2D, 3D and 4D along with some others.
