About Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in some foods and water. It is important for dental health because it protects the teeth from decay. Children and adults at risk for tooth decay may benefit from additional fluoride treatment. This can be done through toothpaste, mouth wash, rinses or treatments in a dentist office.
Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in water and food. It is important for dental health because it protects tooth enamel from acids caused by sugar and bacteria in the mouth, and can cause plaque or lead to tooth decay. Fluoride is especially important in children under six in order to prevent such problems.
How to obtain fluoride:
- Fluoride is found in some foods and water.
- Many toothpastes, mouth washes and rinses have fluoride added.
- A dentist may prescribe a prescription strength fluoride rinse. Fluoride supplements in liquid or tablet form may also be prescribed by a dentist, doctor or pediatrician.
- A dentist may apply a fluoride treatment to teeth in the form of gel, paste or varnish. This treatment contains a high level of fluoride and is commonly administered to children.
You may need additional fluoride if:
- You have a history of frequent cavities. Most dental professionals consider one cavity every other year as a frequent problem.
- You have crowns, bridges or braces. These procedures put teeth at increased risk for tooth decay.
- You have gum disease, which puts teeth at a higher risk for decay.
- You have issues with dry mouth because of a medical condition, side effect of a medication or other reason. Lack of saliva means bacteria and food particles are not easily washed away and acid is not sufficiently neutralized. This leads to an increased risk of tooth decay.
Risks of fluoride:
Fluoride is very safe when used as directed, but can become dangerous in high amounts. Too much fluoride can cause discoloration to teeth and damage to newly forming teeth. Because of this, children should be supervised when they are using toothpastes, mouth washes and rinses containing fluoride. Talk to your doctor about any concerns regarding fluoride use.
