About GMAT Math Strategies
It is good to know test taking strategies when going in to take a standardized test. There are a number of strategies available for those taking the GMAT math that are beneficial in making the test simple to get through.
Problem Solving
Read questions carefully. Simple wording structure like 'may' or 'may not' can cause you points if you try to give the wrong answer because you worked out the problem incorrectly. Test givers will deliberately give the answers that relate to common misinterpretations of the question.
Work everything out
Have scrap paper out during the exam and actually use it. When you work out a problem on paper it is easier to see if you got a step wrong than it is if you worked out the problem in your head.
Learn how to work backwards
If you are stuck on a question you can try plugging in one of the given multiple choice answers and solve the problem in reverse to see if it fits.
Geometry Problems
Assume that diagrams are drawn correctly unless a question says otherwise. However, do not assume that by what you can see you can calculate the answer. Always read the problem to make sure you have the right amounts before calculating your answer.
Word Problems
Build equations for word problems that will help you understand and solve the question being asked. Use obvious letter symbols to stand for the values you need to calculate.
