About Gym Exercise
A gym is a facility used for physical activities. They are often found in schools, community centers or in their own buildings. These fitness centers can vary in size, function and equipment, but all are used with the same intent of working out. Gyms offer exercise in many different forms and methods to accommodate a variety of people.
Aerobic Exercise
This form of exercise is used to improve cardiovascular health and endurance. Aerobic exercise can improve circulation, reduce the risk of diabetes, burn body fat and strengthen muscles. Gyms commonly have stairmasters, elliptical trainers, indoor rowers, stationary bicycles or treadmills that can all be used for aerobic exercise. Larger gyms often have indoor tracks as well, where runners can simulate outdoor or track conditions.
Anaerobic Exercise
In contrast to aerobic exercise, anaerobic activities do not need endurance and instead rely on strength and power. Building muscle can result in more strength and a higher resting metabolic rate so that more calories are burned while doing nothing. Anaerobic exercise is usually accomplished through weight lifting. Most gyms are outfitted with free weights and weight machines, allowing both beginners and advanced members to receive the benefits of weight lifting. Completing short sprints at high speeds is also anaerobic exercise.
Exercise Classes
In addition to exercise equipment, many gyms also hold exercise fitness classes. These classes allow participants to try new activities and meet others interested in physical fitness. Many class teachers are certified and provide excellent instruction. Popular classes are yoga, pilates, zumba, kickboxing and spinning.
Gym Accommodations
In addition to a workout, many gyms offer other services such as child care, massages and nutrition classes. This can provide a holistic health experience for a gym member. Most gyms also have locker rooms for changing in and out of workout clothes, showering and making it much easier to stop off at the gym during busy workdays.
