How to Build a Laptop Computer From Scratch

About Laptop Computer Air Cards

By allowing you to connect using cellular or satellite technologies, laptop computer air cards allow you to get access to the Internet quickly and easily from nearly anywhere. Depending on your laptop’s hardware configuration, there are air cards that can be built in your laptop or plug in to a variety of external ports. While these might need a monthly service fee, the flexibility they offer is often well worth the price.

USB Laptop Air Cards

The most common type of air cards or wireless modems for sale is USB air cards. With the rise in popularity of USB ports on laptops and personal computers, these provide the most compatibility and often include the drivers within the device. This means you can plug them into any computer and start using them with little setup required. USB air cards may also include flash storage or a flash memory card slot to allow for data storage.

PCMCIA and Express Air Cards

While these are becoming less common, there are also laptop computer air cards that connect using the PCMCIA or Express card ports. While these cards perform with similar speeds as their USB counterparts, these can only be connected to a laptop with the proper ports. There are card models available with storage capabilities and flash memory card slots as well. One feature that is more common on these cards is removable external cellular antennas. If you live in an area with poor reception, this might offer a better signal strength and connectivity.

Laptop Air Card Requirements

When choosing a laptop air card, there are a few things to consider before making a purchase. Apart from connection type, the largest factor to consider is which networks have the best coverage in your intended areas of use. Most air cards will require a contract or monthly service agreement for access. When choosing a card, researching the coverage in your area will avoid increased costs due to data roaming or early contract termination.

Most major cellular providers offer an air card solution. With the emergence of high-speed mobile Internet technologies, such as 4G and 4G LTE, choosing a provider with good coverage of your area will often provide excellent speeds. These speeds can rival many wired Internet connection types.

If you are intending to use your card internationally, check with your card provider for compatibility and potential fees before purchasing. Often these fees can add up very quickly. With proper planning, you can avoid any surprises on your data bill.
