About Lifelong Learning Assessments

The concept of lifelong learning is a popular one, and refers to the idea that people should continue learning new things regardless of their age or professional status. Proponents of lifelong learning tend to take classes or self-teach in areas such as art, design, linguistics, culture and history.

Lifelong learning assessments are methods of testing that help people to gage their level of learning in certain areas. Learning assessments come in several forms, such as written tests, quizzes, essays, projects and demonstrations. And just as lifelong learning may be a personal goal or take place in a group environment, lifelong learning assessments may be self-evaluations or required examinations in classrooms.

Self-evaluation Assessments

This form of assessment is common with people who choose to undertake a lifelong learning endeavor on their own. Many people choose this route in order to learn at their own pace, control the material and subjects covered, and to avoid paying others to teach to them what they can learn on their own. Self-evaluations can come in a variety of types and formats; some learners choose to create their own assessments in the form of written tests or exams, while others use the assessments included in textbooks or from online sources.

Required Examinations

This form of lifelong learning assessment is usually required of individuals who choose to learn from classes taught at educational institutions. Some people choose to audit classes in order to avoid examinations, but most opt for the regular method of enrolling in classes so that they will earn college credit upon completion of the course. Required examinations may be written tests, essays, or a combination of the two.
