About Mental Institutions Today
A mental institution is more commonly referred to as a psychiatric hospital today. These facilities take care of patients who have mental disorders that need more intensive treatment than what they are able to receive in an outpatient setting. Generally, patients enter voluntarily; however, if the patient poses a danger, it can be involuntary.
Changes in people's attitude toward mental health issues
In the past, many people would keep the fact that they had a family member in a mental institution a secret. They may say a certain relative moved away or just never mention that person again. These days, the stigma associated with these places has been replaced. Getting needed help is considered a positive step.
Length of stay required has shortened
These days, a short stay in these facilities is much more common than a longer stay. In the past, people spent years and years in these facilities. Now more is known about conditions, medications have been discovered to help people with mental disorders, and conditions that at one time were thought to be incurable are now controlled with medication. Many times a patient will come in for a mediation adjustment and then be released. There is no longer the fear that once you enter a facility, you will never be let out.
Patients are shown more respect
Family is now more involved with treatment, while in the past many people were sent away to these places and forgotten about. Doctors and nurses now treat the patients with more respect. As more about the mind and these types of disorders are learned, many of the past treatments have come into question. Experiments are not done as much on patients as they were in the past. Shock treatment is reserved for cases where it is necessary, instead of common practice. Patients are not heavily drugged today; in the past it was common for them to be drugged so they would not be a bother.
Environment that patients are kept in
Today's mental institutions are clean and not crowded. That was not always the case. It was once thought that these patients would not know any better, so if they were overcrowded and dirty it did not matter. Patients were heavily drugged, probably to keep them from seeing how badly they were living. Also, the fact that family stayed away kept the outside from seeing the conditions. Today, that would not be allowed to happen. There are standards that must be kept and inspections are done to be sure that they are.
