About Mentally Ill Homeless People

There are different circumstances surrounding every homeless person's journey that led them to a life on the streets. Most of the time a string of bad luck has played a large role, but some can overcome a great deal to get back on their feet. The mentally ill, however, are unable to advocate for themselves, and often remain on the streets.

One of the main reasons for a mentally ill person being homeless is due to a lack of medical compliance. There are numerous types and dosages of drugs that the mentally challenged are prescribed. A lot of times the mentally ill will refrain from taking medications because they feel that they do not need them or they just don’t like the way the drugs make them feel. Their decision to stop taking their medication enables them from performing day-to-day activities.

The mentally ill homeless person, lacking skills that are necessary for survival on the streets, is more likely to become a victim of crime. Thieves have the tendency to prey on these types of people. Females that are mentally challenged are often raped and there have been are cases where both homeless women and men have even been victims of murder.

Mentally ill homeless people are subject to malnutrition and sexually transmitted diseases. It is hard to resolve any of these potential problems until health care advocates find these people on the streets and find out about any medications that should be taking.

There are not many resources for the facilities to track down the mentally ill, from one facility to the next one. Regular medical care and medication maintenance can help keep some mentally ill homeless people off the streets.
