How Does Mildew Build Up?

About Mildew Growth

Mildew growth can occur in any home that has a lot of moisture.  You should look for the signs of mildew if you think that there may be some in your home.  Proper cleaning and drying of areas can eliminate mildew leaving your home smelling fresh.

Conditions

Mildew can grow in your home wherever there is an abundance of moisture.  This moisture can come from high humidity conditions or wet areas and objects in your home. Warm temperatures and the presence of oxygen will also encourage mildew growth.

Areas of Growth

Mildew commonly grows in bathrooms and basements.  These areas generally have the most moisture allowing for mildew to thrive.  Garages can contain mildew as well if there is a lot of water that is left on floors and walls.  Objects such as clothing that are stored or left damp can grow mildew over a period of time.

Signs

The most common sign of mildew is a musty smell.  This odor is generally strong even if you are not close to the source of the mildew.  Also, if you see a discoloration in areas that are moist then you most likely have a mildew problem.  This discoloration may be a green or black color.  Inspect areas for these signs if you think mildew may be present.

Removal

There are a variety of products on the market that help remove mildew from your home. You should use one of these products in any area that can be effectively cleaned without damage .  As long as areas are cleaned and kept dry mildew should not return. The musty smell from the mildew should be eliminated as well.  Clean other objects that contain mildew in the washing machine with warm water and detergent.  A rewash may need to be done if a musty smell persists.
