About Mobile Broadband Satellite Internet
Satellite broadband Internet has been a tremendous technological advancement for communities that are in rural areas. Currently, almost any community that has a clear view of the southern sky can receive satellite based Internet. However, while this has been a tremendous advancement in technology, it does have its own unique limitations. Before purchasing mobile broadband satellite Internet, it is important to consider these factors.
How It Works
Satellite Internet works by using a satellite dish to establish a connection to satellites in orbit. This connection from the computer to the satellite allows information to be received by the satellite and broadcast to high speed Internet terminals that are managed by the satellite Internet provider. In essence, the satellite serves as a space based router for the Internet signal. This method is much faster than dial up Internet because the satellites utilize microwaves to broadcast these signals, and microwaves travel at close to the speed of light.
Advantages
Broadband satellite Internet has numerous advantages when it is compared to traditional dial up Internet. In particular, it provides rural communities with access to high speed Internet, and it is comparable in cost to other forms of broadband Internet. The speeds that can be achieved with satellite Internet are exponentially faster than most other forms of Internet that are available to rural communities. However, there are numerous limitations that currently exist.
Disadvantages
Satellite Internet has numerous disadvantages when compared to traditional high speed Internet solutions. In particular, the data stream can be disrupted by severe storms that are passing through the area. This means that the Internet signal can be disrupted for hours at a time. Also, there are numerous data limitations that exist for satellite Internet. The satellites that are in orbit are being used by 1,000s of computers, and as a result, the amount of data that can be sent by each computer is limited to a daily amount. Currently, there are no satellite Internet providers that allow for continual unlimited data usage.
