About Nursing Classes

In order to become a nurse, you must complete nursing classes and take a certification exam. Nursing classes are designed to prepare future nurses to take their licensing exam and work as nurses. In nursing classes, nursing students learn about nursing concepts, nursing practice and treating specific populations.

Nursing Concept Courses

Nursing students take courses to learn about nursing concepts. They learn about their scope of practice and their future role on the healthcare team. Nursing students also learn about theories behind the practice or nursing. Many courses place an emphasis on communication skills to assist student nurses in communicating with patients as well as other healthcare workers. In nursing concept courses, student nurses also learn about nursing ethics.

Nursing Practice Courses

In addition to learning the concept behind nursing, nursing students must also take nursing practice courses. In these courses, nursing students learn about infection control and how to practice their nursing skills safely. They also learn how to treat patients. They learn nursing skills such as charting, establishing a care plan, basic physical assessment and giving injections. Nursing students may also learn how to assist in specific settings, such as an operating room.

Courses on Treating Specific Populations

Registered nurses can work in many different specialties. So, nursing programs attempt to prepare them for treating different segments of the population. They take specialized courses on topics such as pediatric nursing, mental health nursing and geriatric nursing. In these courses, student nurses learn how to take care of the special needs of these different populations.
