About Online Vet Tech Training

Online classes have become increasingly popular among many college students. They are more convenient, less expensive and individually paced better than traditional college classes. There are several accredited schools in the United States that offer online vet tech training classes.

Accreditation

For a veterinary technician to legally work in the United States, he must complete a training course that has been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. This association operates as a committee that is responsible for controlling and monitoring the different types of veterinary activities and schools. Seven online schools are accredited by the AVMA. The status and accreditation of these schools must be approved or changed every year, and new schools and training classes are added to the list of accredited schools.

Coursework and Training

Online coursework and training are much like traditional in-class learning. There are books, tests and experiments designed to train and test the student on her skills. Many online classes offer online books and exams. Others will require the student to order books, complete the tests at home and send them back through the mail. Many online veterinary training courses also offer live classroom videos. This type of learning is especially helpful when the teacher is demonstrating how to do certain procedures on an animal. Students are also required to complete an internship or practicum as part of their training.

Cost

Online veterinary technician training programs are typically cheaper than traditional college programs. Because fewer books are used and items such as uniforms are not needed, the student has an inexpensive supply list. Travel and housing expenses are also greatly reduced. Financial aid is available for students depending on the school they are attending and their financial situation. Most online schools also accept scholarships and grants.
