About Osteopaths
There are misconceptions about what an osteopath physician is. Some people erroneously believe that they are not medical doctors and that they cannot practice what many consider traditional medicine. On the contrary, Osteopaths are able to do the same things an allopathic doctor can, and are fully trained physicians.
How Did Osteopathy Get Started?
In the nineteenth century, traditionally-trained physician, Dr. A.T. Still, was becoming disillusioned with current medical treatments. He believed that the body should be treated as a whole, and began treating patients with this new philosophy. In 1892, opened his own facility and used this holistic approach.
Osteopathic Philosophy
Osteopaths see the body as a whole, believing it has the ability to heal itself when its checks and balances are working properly. Disease is a symptom of the body having a systemic problem, and locating and treating the problem puts the body can be put back in balance. Osteopaths use their hands, eyes and ears to locate the health problem, and with gentle manipulation, help the body function properly again. They are trained in all aspects of physiology and anatomy and use this knowledge to help heal their patients. They also focus on preventing illness by teaching their patients about developing healthy habits and lifestyles for optimum health.
