How to Care for Outdoor Plants

About Outdoor Plants

Outdoor plants are a wonderful way to spruce up a home’s landscape.  Choose outdoor plants that grow well in your climate zone and are resistant to the types of bugs and other nuisances that are common to your area.  Also, take care not to choose plants that are toxic to animals.

Annuals Versus Perennials

Perennial plants grow back every year, as long as they are cared for properly.  It is also important to choose a perennial that is right for your climatic zone.  Annuals, on the other hand, only last for just a season.  Annuals are planted during the spring and contained a boom through the fall season.  Perennials are heartier and more able to withstand the winter months than annuals.

Watering Your Outdoor Plants

You will need to make sure that the ground around your plants has enough water in it.  Different types of outdoor plants will need different levels of moisture, so be ready to attend to plants which have varying needs for water.  Some signs that a plant is under stress and not getting enough water will include wilting or browning of its leaves.   When inspecting your plants for signs of stress, also check the undersides of the leaves for pests that might harm your plants, especially aphids, mealy bugs and other critters.

Choose Appropriate Ground Cover Outdoor Plants

Some areas of your landscape will require some low-lying shrubs or grasses to fill in the space.  These can also be flowers, vines and ivy as well.  Talk to a landscape professional to decide how and where to place your ground cover plants.  The right choices can give your outdoor plants a cohesive look.
