About Pathology Training and Education
Pathology is the study and diagnosis of disease, normally taking place in a laboratory. There are many different kinds of pathology, each one requiring its own specialized training. General pathology is the most widely known. This is a combination of anatomical and clinical pathology. Specialized schooling is required that is approved by the American Board of Pathology.
Education
To become a pathologist, you must attend an accredited medical school. Pathologist courses are offered in undergraduate schools with the option of studying with pathologist residents and fellows. These are known as fellowships in pathology and are offered after the second year of study. Four years of study are required, and you must obtain a license to practice medicine in your state.
Training
After completing undergraduate school and obtaining your license to practice medicine, you must acquire four years of full-time approved training in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This must include 18 months of training in anatomic pathology and 18 months training in clinical pathology. An additional 12 months of full time training is required in either field of study.
Verification and Certification
The American Board of Pathology (ABP) is responsible for overseeing the verification and certification process. A pathology training program director evaluates each pathology candidate's qualifications. The program director observes the performance of the pathologist student in all areas of study and training. They must verify to the ABP that the training is appropriate and the student is ready for the certification examination.
Certification exams are conducted by ABP and consist of written and practical tests. You must pass both tests before obtaining your certification. Certifications are valid for a 10-year period. During that time, you must participate in the ABP Maintenance of Certification Program. Upon completing the 10-year requirement, another certificate will be issued.
