About Private Floral Design Schools

Floral designers make an average of $24,940 per year. Putting together arrangements with an artistic flair is an easy to learn skill, especially if you have a natural knack. Because training is often done on-the-job, private floristry schools that are accredited (and worth your time and money) are few. Before enrolling, make sure the school offers more instruction than what you could learn at home with a book.

Types of Programs

Basic: The American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) offers a certification in floral design (though certification is not required to work in the field). The cost of training and certification with AIFD comes to $2000-2500 after tuition, materials, registration and exam costs.

Specialized: Offered at many AIFD partner schools (as well as privately by individuals), specialized classes teach you about unique elements of arrangements or flowers. You can take individual classes, or enroll in a “specialist” floral design course. These courses are usually not available at accredited colleges, but the subject matter is often included in the basic floristry and art/design courses.

Ornamental Horticulture: Although a little bit different from floristry, ornamental horticulture includes similar elements. Students learn about not only artistic design, but also how to grow, raise and sell decorative plants. Floral design classes are included in the degree programs, along with nursery management, landscaping and classes about different kinds of plants. The range of career options is much wider if you complete a degree in ornamental horticulture. Additionally, your floristry abilities will be greatly aided by your new knowledge.

Goals of Floral Design Education

  • Make arrangements and floral design pieces and build a portfolio of design photos and descriptions.

  • Learn how to make arrangements for specific events and occasions.

  • Gain an understanding of small business management (including business math), customer service and skills necessary to work in a floristry job.
