About Prom Dress Alterations
Not every dress fits perfect. Prom dresses might need an alteration or two. Tucking, pinning, darts, hemming and many more alterations can be done to a prom dress for any given figure. Not every woman is a super model so not every dress should be made for one. For this reason, it is always a good idea to try on a prom dress before purchasing it.
Seamless Seamstress
Alterations are usually done by a seamstress. One can be found by looking online or in the phone book. Always make sure of the seamstresses credentials before hiring. When a seamstress has worked on difficult tasks such as wedding dresses, a prom dress will be easy. It would behoove the prom dress owner to make sure the seamstress has worked with the specific material of the dress. Getting this information makes everything go smoothly.
Take Out or Stay In
It might be necessary to take the dress out. Trying the dress on and having it be too tight will let the owner know it needs to be let out. It is always a good idea to order or purchase a bigger size dress than is necessary. It is easier to take the dress in than to take it out. Height is an important factor when talking about a prom dress. The taller the girl the harder it is to find a decent length in a dress. If the girl is 5’9” or over a dress will more than likely have to have length added to it. If the girl is 5’2” under the dress will more than likely have to be hemmed.
Pricing and Add-Ons
Different seamstresses or alteration shops will have different prices for the different alterations. Most will charge up to $15 to $20 for a hemming, $10 to $30 for taking in or letting out. The price for adding extra length depends on what will be used to lengthen the gown. Replacing missing beads, pearls, stones and other add-ons to a prom dress will largely depend on the shop or seamstress. The very last thing to do is get some accessories and some matching shoes and have a great time at prom.
