About Publishing Stories

Stories are often shorter than a novel; generally anywhere between three and 30 pages. Because of their shorter length, they are difficult to publish on their own, however, there are several ways to go about doing it; some of them are harder than others.

  • Magazines: There are thousands of online magazines that cater to the short story. Many of these publications will take submissions for specific genres while other magazines that publish short stories require a long process to be considered.

  • Anthologies: There are several anthologies that will publish your story as long as it fits into the theme of their anthology. Some of them require that you pay for entry while others hold contests and publish the stories that they like the best.

  • Online: There are several online sites that publish people's fictional stories. These websites allow anyone to read them and anyone can publish their story, no matter how good or bad. This can be a downfall for truly good writers because they are being lumped in with everyone else.

  • eBooks: There are several people within community postings looking for stories for their eBook. These can be a great opportunity for someone that is just getting started in writing or publishing.

  • Self-Publishing: Self-publishing your own stories can be expensive if you don't know how to go about doing it. While many people sink thousands of dollars into their own publishing, they are losing money before they have a chance to make any.
