About Radiography

Radiography involves using radiation as a means to create images of the inner body including tissues and organs. Medical specialists use these images to analyze and then treat various medical conditions. Radiography can also be used for the treatment of malignant tumors.

Uses

Radiography is used in a variety of ways in the medical profession. One way is to produce images like X-rays to detect broken bones. Radiography provides access to the inside of the human body, allowing medical professionals to diagnose and treat certain medical conditions. Another way that radiography is used is in the treatment of cancer patients. This type of radiation is known as ionizing radiation.

Specialization Areas of Radiography

Medical specialists can choose to work in a specific area of radiology. Some of these specialties include sonography, bone densitometry, cardiovascular radiography and nuclear medicine.

Radiologic Technologists

The role of a radiologic technologist is to take diagnostic images and perform radiation therapy treatments. The radiologic tech is also trained in several areas that are essential to the field of radiography. Some of these areas include proper patient positioning, proper care of equipment and ensuring patient safety during radiation care.

Radiologists

A radiologist is the term given for a medical doctor that works in the radiology department. The radiologist works closely with the radiologist technologist. Once images are taken by the technologist, the radiologist reviews them and implements a treatment plan if necessary.

Career Outlook

All careers in the radiology field are expected to grow into the next decade. This includes technicians, sonographers and cardiovascular technologists. Those with the most experience in a variety of radiography specialties will be highly sought after for employment.
