About Relocation Services

Relocation services have to do with moving an employee from one business site to another. Relocation services differ from moving companies. Relocation services can include arranging necessary paperwork for an international relocation, finding a house and finding a school for the children.

The goal for a relocation service is to keep the employee whole. In other words, the employee should at least not lose any money in the transfer. A relocation service should analyze whether the employee will be moving to a higher or lower cost-of-living area. If an employee is moving from a high-cost area to a low-cost area, for example, the relocation should provide a positive cash flow. If the opposite is true and the employee is moving from a low-cost area to a high-cost area, the employer may chose to adjust the salary. The biggest concern is typically the change in housing costs. Comparisons should be made based on square footage.

Most relocation services are a mix of the company using its own human resources department and hiring an outside relocation services firm. Usually a contact person is made available to the employee being relocated to ensure that the employee feels that he or she is being treated fairly. Otherwise, the employee may seek work elsewhere.

When thoroughly conducted, relocation can be a positive experience for an employee and his or her family. Each relocation analysis should be tailored to meet each employee's individual situation and concerns to make it work.
