About Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are both beautiful and functional. They can provide a way to section off a garden from a driveway or walkway, as well as keep soil from deteriorating on uneven terrain. There are multiple ways to create these, and many different materials that can be used.

Retaining walls can be a stunning way to keep soil drained properly in a landscaping design. They can keep dry soil from corroding and falling and prevent flooding in areas where this may be a problem. Retaining walls are commonly used as a way to separate drives and walkways from other landscape elements.

Materials and Construction

Brick, natural stone, wood and concrete can all be used to make retaining walls. The purpose of the wall will determine the best material. Wood timbers and logs are lovely but can rot when not treated properly. Brick will last a long time but requires an immense amount of work. In most cases the ground is excavated before the wall is built.

Advantages

Retaining walls do more than just enhance the appearance of the property. When installed in areas where loose or dry soil is a problem a retaining wall will prevent further erosion. This is a common problem with landscape designed on hills. These walls can also be used in patio areas. This is popular for areas where people want to enjoy a separate outdoor living area behind a small wall. The walls can be used to hold planters and outdoor lights, and will keep the outdoor living area cooler in the warmer months.
