About Special Education Training Programs

Special education training programs were created to teach students with special needs. The phrase special needs could pertain to students with physical disabilities, communication or developmental challenges or behavioral and emotional disorders. Special education training programs could also benefit intellectually gifted students who do not thrive in a generalized learning environment.

Teaching Methods

Most special education training programs offer non-conventional teaching methods. Special education classrooms generally have fewer students and may have more than one teacher or paraeducator per classroom. This helps special needs students receive more one-on-one time with an instructor, which many students need to achieve educational success. Special education students have shorter, simpler assignments, and some subjects may be skipped altogether as instructors do not feel they will benefit the student in the real world.

Gifted Special Education

Special education students who are more intelligent, or gifted, are paired with instructors who are trained to challenge the student continually. Instructors must come up with ways to heighten a gifted student's awareness of a subject, but must use interesting methods to achieve this. Gifted special education students may bore easily. By employing methods and subjects they are known to excel in, teachers will hold the student's interest and help them feel a sense of accomplishment.

Why Segregation is Best

Teaching a special education student in a solitary environment is better for the student, and it puts parents more at ease. Some parents do not feel their children do well in a mainstream educational environment because of issues such as bullying, ridicule and traditional teaching methods. Segregating special needs students and allowing them to experience education with independently created curriculums and experienced instructors promotes the students' overall adaptability and personal self-sufficiency.
