About Topsoil

Topsoil improves the condition of the soil used in gardens. Using a good quality topsoil can help plants and flowers grow better regardless of the ground conditions. There are several types of topsoil that can be used to improve the health of any garden.

Topsoil can be used for any kind of garden. Those who grow vegetables can have bigger crop yields with the right soil. Flowers and shrubs will thrive with the proper nutrients. There are several varieties of topsoil to choose from.

Soil Testing

Before you choose the right topsoil you want to test the existing soil in the yard. You can find testing kits at your local garden cooperative or garden center. The state agricultural extensions in your area may also offer to test the soil for a small fee. The testing will show you what the pH balance is, the acidity levels and the alkaline levels. If something is deficient you'll want a topsoil that can help balance out the issues.

Types of Topsoil

There are three basic types of topsoil. Sandy, loam and clay soils are the main topsoils available. These can be mixed to achieve the perfect balance. Sandy soil is gritty and will be hard to form a solid ball with. Loam is grittier than sand, but is sticky. Clay soil is smooth and retains shape when you try to ball it. You need to know what is currently in your garden and what the plants you are growing need before you choose a topsoil to use.

Purchasing Topsoil

Topsoil can be purchased in bags at your local garden center or home improvement stores. If you have a larger area that you are planting you can purchase soil by the truckload.
