About Vintage Fashion
Vintage is a term used for items that originated in previous decades. Fashion often defines the ideals of each decade. Many people have become interested in recreating vintage fashion styles with a modern twist. Knowing how people dressed in a previous decade can help in the recreation of the styles.
1920s
During the 1920s, fashion saw a dramatic turn from the conservative style of the previous era. Flapper dresses were all the rage and were characterized by uneven hemlines and plunging necklines. The cloche hat was also a popular woman's item. The hat was designed to sit low on the forehead. The tight fit made it ideal for riding in a motor car.
1930s
The 1930s saw fashion return to a more conservative style. Women stopped wearing the cloche hats and started wearing large plate hats that bared the forehead. Flat knee length pleated skirts became popular for daily wear. The 1930s also saw the zipper become incorporated in many fashion aspects as it never had been before.
1940s
During the early 1940s, much of the fashion was made from wool. In the late 1940s, cotton and light linen came in style. Women often wore black Oxford style shoes with low heels. The colors were muted, usually green, grey or brown. Toward the end of the 1940s, women began wearing elaborate asymmetrical ball gowns for evening wear.
1950s
While most men donned solid black suits during the 1950s, women's fashion became colorful and vibrant. Everyday dresses in the 1950s were tight in the bodice and had a flaring skirt. Women wore more daring heels in colors such as red or white.
