About Work Uniforms
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there are 840 classifications of occupations. Most people of working age are required to have a job and will fit into one of these classifications. Your occupation will determine your wage, tasks, schooling and working conditions. Your career choice may also require you to wear a uniform. There are several various types of jobs that require employees to wear different types of uniforms.
Work uniforms are worn for a variety of purposes. Some workers are required to wear uniforms to ensure cleanliness; those working in food service or in laboratory settings often must keep their clothing in sanitary conditions. To prevent cross-contamination, uniforms are sometimes left at the place of employment and not put on until the shift starts. In other work settings, uniforms can be used for protection. Firefighters wear protective jackets, pants, boots, and hats to provide protection from the heat. Construction workers are required to wear hardhats and boots to prevent injuries on the job. Those in the military may wear camouflage when in battle to prevent visual detection by the enemy.
Sometimes uniforms are used for appearance. Many occupations require that personnel wear business attire like suits or skirts. Flight attendants wear uniforms to provide a professional appearance that allows passengers to distinguish them from other passengers. While at the workplace, uniforms can also help create a sense of unity and spirit among employees. When everyone is dressed alike, it can bolster the corporation atmosphere, thus improving relations and increasing productivity.
Some places of work provide workers with uniforms for no cost, while other establishments will make workers pay for them or request that they shop for their own. If uniforms are changed frequently, many companies provide a laundering service; if not, employees are responsible for ensuring their uniforms are clean. Closely related to work uniforms are school uniforms. Many private, religious, and preparatory schools require that their students wear uniforms.
