About the Exotic Birds Campaign

The philosophy of the Exotic Birds Campaign is to stop the exploitation and sale of parrots in chain stores, stop the excessive breeding of birds and to place homeless birds with responsible individuals who will properly care for them. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to educate the public about the consequences of domesticating exotic birds, which will eventually reduce the number of homeless and unwanted birds.

Breeders and retailers continue to breed parrots at an astounding rate, because of the billions of dollars the industry brings in worldwide. The Exotic Birds Campaign supports a no breeding policy, as this excessive breeding only adds to the number of unwanted, neglected and homeless birds. In addition, the long life span of a parrot, between 25 to 90 years, heightens the overpopulation problem.

The belief of the Exotic Birds Campaign is that birds should live in their natural habitat out in the wild and they should not be held in captivity as pets. They are against releasing unwanted pet birds into the wild, because they could not survive. The campaign advises prospective bird owners to adopt an unwanted bird through an adoption agency or a bird sanctuary, instead of purchasing one from a pet store.

The Exotic Birds Campaign provides educational information about captive birds, the neglect of birds and what can be done to prevent this abuse. The organization also works with other parrot protection associations that share the same views. The Exotic Birds Campaign encourages supporters to report pet shops that are abusing or neglecting their birds, assist in creating laws that help birds by writing to legislators and educate others about bird abuse, the bird industry and how to properly care for birds.
