Acupuncture Side Effects
When you look into any new medical treatment, one of the things you should consider is the side effects that may come with the treatment. There are very few complications that accompany acupuncture. The biggest risks you have to worry about are punctured organs and infection. Using a reputable practitioner is the easiest way to avoid these complications.
According to the National Institute of Health, acupuncture in the United States is regulated by the FDA. Not only are the practitioners required to be licensed, but the needles that are used during this procedure must be of a certain type. According to FDA regulations, these needles must be nontoxic and sterile. They must also contain a label that states they are to be used only one time and only by those practitioners who are qualified.
The FDA receives very few reports of complications every year. As millions are treated using this alternative method and a number of acupuncture needles may be used during one treatment, this allows you to feel comfortable that you will not be harmed during the procedure. Complications do appear occasionally and they are linked to the needles not be sterilized properly or the practitioner not delivering them properly.
When you visit a practitioner, he or she should use a brand new set of needles. The needles must be taken from a sealed package, preferably in your presence. Treatment sites should be swabbed with a disinfectant, such as alcohol, before the needles are inserted also. If this process is not followed, you are at risk of a punctured organ or infection. To prevent this, ensure you are using a qualified practitioner and one who follows the above process.
