Adopting a Pet at Pet Supplies Stores
Adopting a pet is a fairly simple process when going through a reputable agency. Most pet adoptions occur at a humane society or your local pet supply store. Agencies normally require potential pet owners to adhere to a few guidelines before the adoption process can be finalized. Your home may also be inspected by the agency to ensure all safety requirements are met for your potential pet.
Why Adoption is Best
Many pet owners would rather purchase specialized breeds of pets than adopt. But in doing so, this may result in the euthanization of a pet, for not all that are housed with shelters and humane societies become adopted. That is the unfortunate truth and also why it is so important to adopt pets. It honestly gives them a brighter future in your comfortable, loving home.
Finding Your Pet
The first step in the adoption process is finding a pet for your family that will fit in with your lifestyle. Shelters bring available pets to local pet supply stores a couple of times per week to showcase them to persons interested in adoption. It is best to go meet and interact with available pets in person to see which are the most receptive to your family. Cats are by far the most independent type of pet and are adopted pretty quickly. If you are not a cat person, they are usually plenty of dogs to choose from too.
Application and Fee
Each pet has different needs and the shelter that is housing the animal will have a list of questions and requirements that your family will need to answer. Fill out the adoption application and answer the questions truthfully, for this is in the best interest of the pet. The agency representative will be on-site and available to speak with potential adopters, answer questions and go over your completed application with you. If the representative feels your family is a good fit for the pet you are interested in, they will ask for an adoption fee that covers various costs such as spay and neuter surgery, vaccinations, deworming and other services that ensure the health of your potential pet.
Finalizing Adoption
Once you have remitted your adoption fee and filled out the necessary paperwork, shelter representatives may want to visit your home to check for any safety issues as a last precaution. These could include fencing problems, home cleanliness and ensuring any harmful items are kept in areas that animals will not be able to get into them. Abiding by all adoption regulations is merely for the safety of your pet and shelters are protective of all animals they have rescued and at times, nursed back to health.
