Advantages and Disadvantages of Cosmetic Surgery
For many years cosmetic surgery has been a popular way for people to improve their appearance. They may choose to have this done for various reasons that may or may not be medically necessary. Regardless of the reason, there are both advantages and disadvantages that must be considered.
Advantages
There are many obvious advantages of cosmetic surgery. When done correctly, most types of cosmetic surgery work very well at improving the appearance of the patient. Cosmetic surgery can help remove several years of age from a person's appearance. If a patient has never liked the size of their nose or the shape of their chin, this can also be corrected. One of the best advantages is that cosmetic surgery can correct scars or other imperfections to some extent for those who have been severely injured.
Disadvantages
There are also some disadvantages of cosmetic surgery. Depending upon which procedure is done, it can be very expensive and is not usually covered by health insurance. Some types of cosmetic surgery may also take a fair amount of recovery time. There may also be procedures that require more than one surgery to correct the problem condition or imperfection. This can add to the total cost and complete recovery time substantially.
Types of Procedures
Many of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures are performed on thousands of patients every year. Among these include face lifts, liposuction and breast implants. Most patients have had much success with the results of these types of procedures. However, it is still very important to weigh both the advantages and disadvantages of any type of surgical procedure.
