How to Protect Computers in a Web Cafe

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet Cafe

Internet cafes are locations where the general public can use provided computers and laptops for their own personal usage. Internet cafes are especially popular in countries where people don't own their own computers, for financial reasons. These are also popular for students who need to perform class related research as well. These cafes are great resources, but they can also create disadvantages for cafe owners and for patrons.

The Advantages of An Internet Cafe

One of the advantages of an Internet cafe, is that it's democratic, and welcoming. Here, any person who wishes to can use a computer, and gain access to the Internet. This leads to another advantage of an Internet cafe. People who gain access to the Internet can gain access to job leads, create email accounts and gain access to community resources that can help them in urgent and dire situations. They can also gain contact to friends and family members who are located in other regions of the world.

Internet cafes provide clean, safe and quiet environments for people to either surf the Internet or to use word processing programs to draft letters. Owners of an Internet cafe can feel a sense of pride, knowing that they are providing a welcome and now necessary service for those in the community. This is especially true, since most Internet cafes are free of charge.

The Disadvantages of An Internet Cafe

An Internet cafe can allow all sorts of people to gain access to the Internet. This means that sometimes, criminals can use these computers to conduct activity, such as narcotic sales, human trafficking and all other sorts of ugly activities. Because the computers belong to the Internet cafe and not the individual using the computers, police and other authorities can't directly trace internet service to the criminal. This in turn makes Internet cafes very attractive to them.

Beyond this, people can download all sorts of programs and files, causing the computers to be infected with viruses, and other malware. The Internet cafe owner will constantly have to clean up the computers of this malware. They will also have to create strong firewalls on the systems, to prevent users from surfing on illegal websites.

Finally, the cost of maintaining an Internet cafe can be very expensive. Not only will the owner have to provide Internet service for all of the computers, but they will have to purchase computers and repair them all as well.
