African Interior Design Ideas

Whether you are decorating an entire home or a single room in the house, one exciting theme to consider is the natural, earthy beauty of Africa. With its beautiful landscapes and rich culture, it isn't difficult to find African interior design ideas that perfectly suit your taste and your home.

  1. Paint walls using warm, neutral earth tones. For example, colors such as beige, taupe or cream are attractive options.

  2. Create an accent wall if you want a pop of color to the room. Deeper earthy tones of deep green, brick red, or chocolate brown are options that will successfully add an element of color to a room.

  3. Choose furniture, such as side or coffee tables, that is made of dark wood, such as mahogany or walnut.

  4. Buy sofas and chairs that are a solid neutral color and accessorize them with tribal or animal print pillows. Sofas for an African themed home may be made of cotton or leather.

  5. Hang tribal textiles on your walls or use them as throws on your upholstery.

  6. Buy tribal masks for your walls. Choose your mask either by your preference in their appearance, or do your research and base your selection off of the meaning or significance of it.

  7. Accessorize your home with wooden art. African art offers many hand carved pieces that are made of wood. These can represent animals such as elephants or giraffes, or they may be of people in various poses. As with masks, try researching different figurines to unearth any symbolism that they may have, such as fertility for example.

  8. Install hardwood flooring if you are changing the flooring in your current home or if you are moving into a new home. Add rugs that are neutral colored or faux animal print.

  9. Add potted plants. These should be full, leafy plants, particularly if you are trying to achieve a more African jungle affect.
