Alternatives for Horse Wormers
If you are trying to find ways to worm your horse less frequently, you do so by removing the number of worms to a level that they will not pose a threat to the horse’s general health. There are quite a few ways to accomplish this task.
Manure
By removing manure more frequently from the horse’s field, you can lessen the amount of worms the horse will have. Eggs are in the manure, eggs from parasites, and by removing the manure you are removing the amount of eggs that can enter the horse. Another manure method is to take a sample from your horse that is fresh and have it examined by a veterinarian. While this is fine for some parasites, for others like tape worms and cyathastomes, it can be very difficult to detect.
Harrow the Field
By using a harrow to rake a field smooth, you can expose the eggs in the manure to the elements and shorten the survival life of the parasite. This is especially a good idea on days that are particularly hot and dry, as they can kill the parasite quickly and dry up the eggs.
Bot Parasite Egg Removal
As this parasite has its eggs on the coat of the horse, by cleaning and brushing your horses daily you can reduce the amount of larvae and eggs from this particular parasite. The fewer the eggs at any given time the less the chances are of your horse becoming ill from parasites.
Herbal Remedies
There are some herbal wormers that are on the market. Most have some type of herb, like garlic, that has been shown to rid the body of worms. While this is immeasurably less effective than any other solution, it is still an option that you can try if you want to avoid chemical alternatives.
