The Best Interior Design Style for a House

American Interior Design Style

There have been several different interior design styles developed in America throughout history.  These styles vary depending upon the home’s style and the owner's taste.   This gives designers and homeowners several options to choose from whenever they are decorating their home’s interior.

  • American Colonial Style dates back to the eighteenth century.  It was originally created for American colonial homes, focusing upon their function and practicality.  This style is still popular amongst owners of colonial style homes today even though it is quite traditional and simple.  Some of the most commonly used things include paint instead of wallpaper, simple window treatments that are made from either silk or brocade, shutters, chandeliers, wall-mounted iron candle holders and vases that are made out of either plain wood or earthenware.

  • Southwestern Style was first popular in the southwestern United States.  Today it is commonly used across the nation though.  This style commonly incorporates the use of bright and bold colors (i.e. blues, reds, yellows).  Other common characteristics include light wood furniture pieces, hand-woven rugs and tapestries, clay pottery and longhorns.  The furniture usually has decorative carvings and is upholstered in leather for a rustic look.  Sometimes stucco is also used to provide a unique wall treatment.

  • Shaker Style comes from a religious group that started in United States.  They were known to create simplistic, functional furniture that had wood design but no adornment or curvature.  This style can still be found in modern homes and cottages today.  There are antique pieces and replica pieces available for you to choose from.
