Importance of Continuing Education for Nurses

Anesthesiologist Continuing Education Requirements

Just like all other medical fields, there are required continuing education courses for anesthesiologists as well. The purpose of many of these courses is to keep anesthesiologists up-to-date on new information, technology and concerns that will make their job more efficient or accurate.

Significance: Anesthesiologists are often required to take more stringent courses in pharmacology and anatomy. Because an anesthesiologist is responsible for administering medications and monitoring a patient's pain levels, knowing current information about the drugs being given is important.

Purpose: The purpose of continuing education is for an anesthesiologist to learn about new procedures, technology, types of medication and new side effects of common drugs used. This gives doctors and drug administers new ways to help a patient in split-second decisions when they need it as well as during surgery. Since doctors are often disassociated with other practices, one of the many reasons for continued education is for sharing knowledge. What one doctor does may work for another while it does nothing for a doctor from a different region. This helps to create more well-informed doctors.

Courses: Many of the courses that are offered for anesthesiologists can be different depending on location, disciplines and working environments. Some of the most common continuing education courses that are always offered are opioids, pain management and blood disorders.

Classroom Hours: While the number of hours needed in continuing education can vary from state to state, the average is to complete 40 hours of training within two years.
